Abstract
Introduction: Fenugreek, Trigonella foenum-groecum L. seeds extract is a component of many nutritional dietary products that are recommended for athletes and exercising subjects. The aim of present study was to evaluate and comparison of fenugreek supplementation and exercise training on serum calcium and phosphorus in healthy active female subjects during 6-week intervention program.
Methodology: In this quasi-experimental study, 27 active women (mean age: 22.3 ± 3.4 years old) were randomly assigned to Pilates training, Fenugreek supplementation and control groups. The exercise protocol included a 6-week Pilates practice that started at intensity of 60% of the maximum heart rate and reached 80% of the maximum heart rate (two sessions per week, each session lasted 60 minutes) .Supplementation group received 500 mg capsule of Fenugreek seeds extract for 6 weeks. Serum Calcium and phosphorus levels were measured with Photometric method And (cresolphethalein copmplexone) CPC And UV test before and after the training period. The data were analyzed by SPSS 20 statistical software after encoding. Paired t-test, ANCOVA and post hoc tests were used for statistical analyzes and the significance level was considered as 0.05.
Results: In both experimental groups after six weeks of intervention, calcium increased significantly in the post-test compared to the pre-test (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of calcium changes. Phosphorus variable did not change significantly in the post-test in comparison with the pre-test (P < 0.05) in all groups. Also, we observed no significant differences between the groups in terms of phosphorus changes.
Discussion: These results indicated that both Fenugreek supplement and aerobic exercise may significantly improve calcium in active women And plays an important role in muscle activity, blood coagulation, nerve conduction, activation of several enzymes, release of fluids from cell membranes and more.
