Abstract
Introduction: Anxiety and depression disorders in childhood and adolescence are common psychiatric disorders in these age groups. In the past decade, with the increasing incidence of these disorders at an earlier age, much attention has been devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety and depression in children and adolescents. Therefore, the present study was to compare the psychological characteristics of children athletes and non-athletes with use of Draw-a-Person colour test.
Methodology: The research method was a descriptive which conducted in a comparative - causal manner. The statistical population of this study included Kerman elementary school students in the academic year of 96-95, whose number were about 20,000. According to the Morgan table, a sample of 104 athletes and 104 non-athlete girls were selected. The sampling method was purposeful. To measure the variables of the research (anxiety and depression symptoms), Draw-a-Person colour test (Jacqueline Rvayh Vhnjar 1977) was used. For analyzing the findings, descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and independent t test (p<0.05) were used to compare the groups.
Results: The results showed that the athlete's children had less symptoms of anxiety and depression than non-athletes.
Discussion: Athletic children who were involved in various sports activities, regarding the fact that physical and physical activity caused the development of mental processes and the possible increase of serotonin and endorphin, they were able to resist the symptoms of depression and anxiety, and were less likely to face problems. Regarding that sport as a suitable non-invasive physical activity with minimal side effects may be the best manner to promote health and reduce mild anxiety and depression. In addition, it may be considered as a way to prevent diseases in order to reducing healthcare costs.
