Abstract
Introduction: The center of mass is a quantity that related to the mass of the whole body, its stature, and the mass and length of the upper and lower segments of the human body, and it can be considered as a person's balance point. The center of mass is one of the important features of the physical structure of individuals, which is used in the balance assignments study and screening in order to investigate physical illness, aptitude, safety devices designing and educational supplementary, as well as predicting certain diseases, such as cancer and cardiovascular problems. Therefore, it seems helpful to consider the procedure of the center of mass changes according to age and gender segregation, along with observing the changes of other physical characteristics and body proportions. From this point of view, the purpose of the present fundamental research was to observe and chart the changes in the center of masses average by age in boys and girls between 6 and 18 years old.
Methodology: The participants of this study were 768 children and adolescents who was selected by cluster sampling from 315,984 student population of Isfahan. In this research, the center of mass of the girls and boys aged from 6 to 18 years old was obtained from the center of mass weighing system, based on the balanced torque principle in equilibrium position, and the diagrams were drawn based on the center of mass average of each age group for both girl and boy using MATLAB software.
Results: The diagrams showed that the girls have lower center of mass than the boys in healthy sample group, and the center of mass average goes down as the age increases and goes from childhood to adolescence.
Discussion: The diagrams of this research can be used along with other existing growth diagrams to study the changes in body proportions. However, knowing the center of the mass growth procedure can to some extent predict the center of mass for people at older ages, since the calculation of the center of the mass is not considered by educators, researchers, health care providers and designers due to the time consuming, high cost and need for expertise to calculate the center of the mass.
