Abstract
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between changes in leptin hormone with VO2max and body composition indexes (body weight, body mass index (BMI), waist to hip, body fat percentage), following a resistance exercise course with limited calorie intake in overweight young girls.
Methodology: The research method was a semi-experimental, field-laboratory one. 40 overweight young girls who were able to participate in the exercise protocol regularly, were randomly selected among the statistical population through a simple sampling. As well, they were randomly divided into four groups of 10: 1- resistance exercise group with limited calorie intake, 2- resistance exercise group, 3- limited calorie intake group and 4-control group (10 persons). All anthropometric characteristics, body composition, cardiac and respiratory fitness, and the leptin were measured in two stages (pre-test and post-test) under the same conditions using valid field and laboratory instruments. The exercise protocol was performed for 12 weeks, 3 sessions a week. The statistical tests of Shapiro-Wilk, Levine, one-way ANOVA were used with repeated measurements to test the research hypotheses at a significant level (p<0.05).
Results: The results showed that there was no significant correlation between changes in leptin and body weight, BMI, WHR, BF% (p>0.05). In addition, there was no significant correlation between maximum oxygen consumption and body weight, BMI, WHR, BF% and BMI changes (p>0.05). In addition, there was no significant relationship between changes in leptin and maximum oxygen consumption (p>0.05). Leptin changes, maximum oxygen consumption, body weight, and BMI were significantly different from pre-test to post-test (P<0.05).
Discussion: Based on the results, it can be stated that performing 12-week resistance exercise with limited calorie intake and 12 weeks of resistance exercise alone are associated with beneficial changes in the activity of leptin hormone, the maximum intake of oxygen with body weight, BMI, WHR and BF in overweight girls. Therefore, the implementation of such an exercise protocol is recommended for them.
