Abstract
Introduction: Karate is known as one of the martial arts throughout the world and has special popularity and credibility among athletes especially the youth. This sport is done in two parts named Kata and Kumite, and each part requires different factors from the relevant anthropometric point of view and the student acquires many skills with regard to performance and changes in physical features by practicing. The purpose of the present research is to investigate the anthropometric features of the elite male karate athletes in the two parts of Kumite and Kata with the goal of talent detection and comparing their anthropometric differences in order to achieve better results in the field of championship.
Methodology: The present research is a descriptive-comparative one whose statistical population is the camp participants of Iranian Karate Athletes National Team. For this purpose, 10 Kumite and 10 Kata athletes were selected purposefully and voluntarily. The research variables include age, weight, attendance record in National Team Camp, height when standing and sitting, open arms length, upper limbs length, arms length, forearm length, arm circumference, forearm circumference, wrist circumference, elbow width, chest circumference, waist, lower limbs length, hip length, leg length, hip circumference, buttocks circumference, leg circumference, ankle circumference, and knee width. The anthropometric features were measured with standardized anthropometric methods and tools. After making sure about normal distribution of data using Shapiro-Wilk and Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests, for comparing the two Kata and Kumite groups the Independent T-test at P≤0.05 level was used and the results were analyzed using SPSS 22 software.
Results: The research results indicated that significant difference was observed in the variables of height when standing and sitting, open arms length, upper limbs length, arm length, forearm length, elbow width, hip length, and leg length(P<0.05).
Discussion: Nowadays, considering that the sports are becoming professional, experts has paid so much attention for recognizing its physical structure that leading the teenagers and they are talented is the most important factor of recognition of the type of sport for the student, and increases the significance of talent detection in this field. The obtained results indicate the high and significant effect of anthropometric features on the success of Karate athletes based on their field (Kata & Kumite) and in summary, the average of the measured variables in Kumite athletes is higher than that of the Kata athletes, and this is because of the features of their field.
