Abstract
Introduction: Knowledge about an athlete’s personality has a great deal of potential for both applied and theoretical work. Personality is a topic that has been studied for several decades, both in the field of psychology generally, and more specifically in the field of sport psychology. Within sport psychology, the interest in personality has diminished in recent years, and it is not as popular of a topic as it was in the mid 20th century. However, personality research is still a useful area of interest in helping to understand athletes. In addition to other developments, sport personality research has developed from a strict trait orientation to an interactional orientation. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship of personality dimensions with physical motivation of physical education teachers.
Methodology: The research method in this research is descriptive, surveying and correlation research. The statistical sample included 153 physical education teachers who were randomly selected and responded to the five-factor NEO questionnaire and Sport motivation scale-6 (SMS-6) Clifford taxes and colleagues (2007) questionnaire. Data were analyzed using by Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression.
Results: The results showed that there is significant correlation between Extroversion, Agreeableness, loyalty and Honesty about experiences with sport motivation (P=0.001). Between components of personality dimensions, the component of loyalty had the highest correlation with sport motivation (P=0.000, r=0.467). Also, the results showed that there is no significant correlation between emotional durability with sport motivation (P=0.621).
Discussion: The findings of this research show the importance of identifying personality dimensions in terms of Sport motivation.
