Determination of the norms for talent identification in athletics for first middle school girls of Zanjan, Qom and Ilam provinces

Abstract
Introduction: Early identification of susceptible individuals is the most influential factor in competitive sports. Talent Identification is a process by which children are encouraged to participate in the sports at which they are most likely to succeed, based on results of testing selected parameters. Each person’s talent should identified and guided with emphasis on a three-step process of identification, selection, and training. The purpose of this study was to determination of the norms for talent identification in athletics for first middle school girls of Zanjan, Qom and Ilam provinces.
Methodology: 6000 girl students from first middle school of Zanjan, Qom and Ilam provinces carried out six anthropometric and physiologic tests (height, standing long jump, sargent jump, 30m sprint run, standing medicine ball (1kg) from chest and 6 min 20m shuttle run). Then 1 % of best records at the main test and 50 % of them (1%) in second test (=0.005) determined as norm (talented).
Results: Standing Jump; (12.5–13.5 yrs old: ≥183 cm with ≥160 cm Height; 13.5-14.5 yrs old: ≥195 cm with ≥160 cm Height; 14.5-15.5 yrs old: ≥210 cm with ≥165 cm Height); Sargent Jump; (12.5–13.5 yrs old: ≥40 cm with ≥160 cm Height; 13.5-14.5 yrs old: ≥44 cm with ≥160 cm Height; 14.5-15.5 yrs old: ≥46 cm with ≥165 cm Height); 30m Sprint; (12.5–13.5 yrs old: ≥4.80 s with ≥155 cm Height; 13.5-14.5 yrs old: ≥4.75 s with ≥155 cm Height; 14.5-15.5 yrs old: ≥4.70 s with ≥160 cm Height); Medicine ball Chest Throws; (12.5–13.5 yrs old: ≥7 m with ≥160 cm Height; 13.5-14.5 yrs old: ≥7.50 m with ≥165 cm Height; 14.5-15.5 yrs old: ≥8 m with ≥165 cm Height); 6 min Shuttle Run (20m round); (12.5–13.5 yrs old: ≥26 round with ≥150 cm Standing Jump; 13.5-14.5 yrs old: ≥27.5 r with ≥160 cm Standing Jump; 14.5-15.5 yrs old: ≥28.5 r with ≥170 cm Standing Jump).
Discussion: As showed in results, norms for talent identification in athletics (jumps, sprints, throws and distance & mid-distance,) for first middle school girls determined. However, it should be note that this is an applicable norm in Iran’s schools and other important factors such as interest, equipment, psychological properties, latent diseases, perceptual abilities are also important in talent identification process.
