Abstract
Introduction: In spite of worldwide advertisements about the disadvantages of smoking, it has been accepted as a mandatory fact, and huge benefits and tremendous amount of tax is obtained through producing cigarettes. Smoking is affected by several factors. Review of various researches showed that exercise can be effective in reducing smoking and prevents its use, therefore the purpose of the present study was to survey the role of Sport on Smoking Rate in Iran (1363-1394), during the years 1984-2015.
Methodology: This is a descriptive-analytic study done in the form of a time series. To test the model we used Econometrics method and model of Generalized least squares (GLS) and Eviews software (10). Sports expenditures of government and household have been used as a sports index in this research. Variables such as urban families’ income, unemployment, and literacy rate were studied, as well. Required information have been collected from the Management and Planning Organization, Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Central Bank of Iran.
Results: The results showed that sport affect a significant negative coefficient (-0.286924) on cigarette use, whereas considering logarithmic nature of the model, this result means that one percent increase in the sport spending (Sports expenditures of government and household), assuming fixing other control variables, is equal to 0.29 percentage reducing in cigarette use.
Discussion: According to the results, government have to assign more budget for sport to develop its macro goals such as health and smoking control, hence motivating people to participate in sport and physical education, and also decrease the smoking rate.
