The mystery of apelin response to exercise training - health approach during pregnancy

Introduction: Evidence shows that apelin and its mRNA are highly expressed in the mammary gland during pregnancy and lactation. Apelin as an important peptide is the endogenous ligand for the G-protein-coupled APJ receptor and is expressed at the surface of some cell types. It is widely expressed in heart and adipose tissue. Recent studies have been investigating continuously effective mechanisms in prevention of renal and cardiovascular complications affected by hypertension in fetus and mother during pregnancy. Currently, some therapeutic interventions have pointed to the important role of apelin and its receptor (APJ) on fluid balance and cardiovascular regulation.
Methodology: The aim of present study was to investigate the conflict interactions of this hormone with exercise training and its dual physiological function, including interacting with insulin hormone in regulating blood glucose, and also interacting with nitric oxide in reducing blood pressure, as a secreted hormone from cardiovascular tissue. It seems survey of relationships and adaptations to exercise training can effectively organize future studies on apelin roles in preventing pregnancy complications. This review summarizes evidence about apelin response to exercise training during pregnancy period.
Results: Studies have indicated the benefits of exercise training in weight loss and reducing inflammation leading apelin secretion to decrease as an adipocytokine and to increase as a cardiovascular-derived hormone in interaction with nitric oxide which prevents atherosclerosis and hypertension, and finally promotes immune system parameters.
Discussion: Based on research findings on pregnancy hypertension treatment during last two decades, it can be concluded that exercise training by influencing apelinergic system has an important role to get healthy in this particular period.
