Abstract
Introduction: The content of physical education curriculum in schools is one of the most important issues in teaching physical education and its content, as the most important domains in educational sport, affects participating students in recreational sport in the future. As doing sport activity is a kind of health behavior and PRECEDE model is used to design health behavior changes, the purpose of this study was investigating determining factors affecting regular participation in sport activities and determining priorities of physical education teaching based on PRECEDE model.
Methodology: The research method was descriptive – correlation. Statistical sample consisted of 335 citizens of Tehran participating in leisure sport activities. The research instrument was a researcher made questionnaire which was made according to PRECEDE model. The content and construct validity were approved by investigating opinions of sport management faculty members and Exploratory Factor Analysis of pilot research data. The reliability was approved by Cronbach’s alpha method (α=0.86). The SPSS 19 software was used for descriptive statistics and exploratory factor analysis. Also, Confirmatory Factor Analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) were done by LISREL 8.7 software.
Results: Data analysis showed predisposing factors (physical fitness, skills, knowledge, self efficacy, self regulation, enjoy and attitude) with 0.38 effect coefficient and reinforcing factors (role modeling, peer support and media) with 0.42 effect coefficient have direct and significant effect on participation of people in sport. Also, enabling factors (access, facilities, laws and programs) with -0.15 effect coefficient and reinforcing factors with 0.59 effect coefficient via influencing predisposing factors have indirect effect on participation of people in sport activities.
Discussion: The results showed predisposing and reinforcing factors have significant effect on participation of people in leisure sport activities. It means if the content of physical education curriculum increase the physical fitness, sport knowledge, sport skills, positive attitude toward sport activities and improve some psychological factors such as self efficacy and self regulation the probability of participation of students in recreational sport will increase. In addition, accessibility to sport places, suitable equipment, supportive laws and various programs have important effect on developing predisposing factors and people participation in sport. It means providing enough and suitable sport equipment in schools and making schools as a public sport place and designing extra curriculum programs can be useful in increasing participation of people in sport activities.
