Abstract
Introduction: Vegetarian diets may play a beneficial role in promoting health and preventing obesity. Previous study has indicated that BMI increases when a wider spectrum of animal products are eaten. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of eight weeks raw veganism diet with aerobic exercise on lipid profile and body composition of non-athlete obese women.
Methodology: Thirty non-athlete obese women aged 20 to 35 years old with body mass index equal or greater than 30 kg/m2 volunteered to participate in this study. The participants were divided randomly into three equal groups of aerobic exercise, raw veganism diet and combination of exercise and diet. Aerobic training program performed for eight weeks, three sessions per week and each session lasting 60 minutes with intensity of 60-70 percentage of maximum heart rate. Diet was consisting of raw veganism diet without meet and its products. Before and after eight weeks exercise and diet intervention, body composition and lipid profile of participants were evaluated by using body composition analyzer and valid kits and ELISA method. The ANCOVA test was used for data analysis (p<0.05).
Results: Results showed that eight weeks of aerobic exercise with moderate intensity accompaniment with raw veganism diet led to significant reduction in weight (p=0.0001), fat percent (p=0. 0001), LDL (p=0.0001), TG (p=0.0001) and TC (p=0.0001) with significant increase in HDL (p=0.0001).
Discussion: In conclusion, it seems that aerobic exercise with moderate intensity accompaniment with raw veganism diet may lead to improvement in some cardiovascular risk factors in non-athlete obese women.
