Abstract
Introduction: One of the factors affecting the rate of sports participation is the type of motivation and their attitude toward recreational sports activities. Also personality characteristics of individuals have effect on people's exercise or not. Because personality characteristics effect on its surrounding community as an incompatible factors of human characteristic, on the other hand participation of individuals in sport gatherings can be influenced by the characteristics of individuals. Therefore the purpose of current research is prediction of the participation rate of students of Tehran in general sport activities based on Neo's personality factor.
Methodology: The current research is descriptive and correlational that data collection was done in a field. The statistical population of research was all second-grade high school female students in Tehran's 7th district (N = 760) which using Morgan Table, a sample of 260 individuals as the sample of the research. The data collection tool was a standard questionnaire for the short form of Neo personality factors, Casta and McCary (1392). Its content validity was confirmed in previous researches and its reliability was obtained through Cronbach's alpha coefficient ( = 0.87). Also, to measure the participation rate of individuals in sports activities, some questions were asked about their activity level per week. To analyze the statistics of the effect of personality factors on the participation rate of Tehran's students used Pearson test and multiple linear regressions.
Results: The results of regressions test showed that there is a significant relationship between personality dimensions of neo-components of flexibility personality (P-0.001, t-5.324) and adaptive personality of individual (P-0.001, t-3.701), and stronger prediction for girls to participate in sport activities.
Discussion: Because of the cooperative nature of sport and sport activities, the response to internal emotions and its satisfaction in the form of group and individual sport activities, encouraging learning new techniques and experiences to achieve sporting success, participating in different fields and becoming more familiar with the world around them, open one person to accept new experiences. And it can be said that the athlete, due to the nature of his sport, is forced to break the fence and the usual boundaries and learn newer ways and add his experiences. Also compatible factor, which is interpersonal, includes features such as trust, altruism and adherence. Trust helps the individual rely on others for active participation in group and collective activities and able to expand group relationship and activities.
